Siamo alla
fine dell'itinerario N. 1 e percorrendo l'ultimo rettilineo
da Piazza Lido di Pegli, giungiamo davanti al Castelluccio
che delimita il confine con il vicino quartiere di Pra'. Il
fortilizio del Castelluccio risale all’anno 1000 d.C. La
fortezza originaria venne distrutta, considerata la
posizione panoramica e dominante sita su di una scogliera a
picco sul mare, si presentò la necessità di ricostruirla nel
XVII secolo dai Marchesi Lomellini. Si conserva ancora
un’epigrafe nella Chiesa di S.Martino a Genova Pegli sul
muro perimetrale meridionale interno del campanile di cui
una copia recente fu posta nell’atrio del Municipio. I
ruderi del Castelluccio sono oggetto di una storia: nel 1800
i francesi erano assediati dagli austriaci e dagli inglesi,
la posizione era buona, vista la dominanza sul mare e poteva
resistere dagli assalti delle soldatesche austriache, ma i
cannoni dei vascelli inglesi minacciavano di ridurlo in
polvere. Il Castelluccio disponeva di due soli
cannoni!!!..bisognava prendere una posizione, così il
Comandante Francese tentò tutte le vie per impedire una
capitolazione vergognosa e decise alla fine di abbandonare
il Castelluccio. Venuta la notte fece armare i suoi uomini
preparati alla partenza, ma prima ordinò che si attaccasse
al collo di un asino che si trovava lì per caso, una
lanterna accesa. L’animale lasciato libero vagava per il
piccolo forte, il ché trasse in inganno le linee nemiche che
non sospettando nulla, non si accorsero che la guarnigione,
uscita fuori, si era condotta a Genova. L’indomani gli
austriaci si lanciarono all’assalto ma rimasero stupiti non
trovando opposizione di sorta. Fin qui la storiella potrebbe
passare ma vi si aggiunse dell’altro: il fatto d’arme
inesistente fu trasformato dai bollettini di Vienna in una
vittoria. Nella seconda guerra mondiale la stessa struttura
venne usata come postazione tedesca proprio per la sua
posizione, venne costruito al di sotto un bunker ancora oggi
presente.

We are at the end of
the
itinerary No. 1 and
following the last
part of the road from
"Lido di Pegli"
Square, we arrive
in front of the
"Castelluccio"
which delimits the border with the
nearby Pra'. The
"Castelluccio" fortress
dates back to the year
1000 AD. The original
fortress was destroyed
and it was rebuilt in 17th century by the Lomellini Marquises
considering the panoramic
and dominant position,
situated
on a cliff
overlooking the sea.
An epigraph is still preserved in the Church of
St. Martino in Pegli on the internal
southern perimeter wall
of the bell tower and
a
recent copy was placed
at the
entrance of
the Town Hall. The ruins of
"Castelluccio"
are the
subject of a story: in 1800 the French
army
was
besieged by the Austrians
and the English, the
position was good,
due to
the dominance over the
sea and
they
could resist the
attacks of the Austrian
soldiers, but the cannons
of the English vessels
threatened to reduce it in powder. The
"Castelluccio"
had only two cannons!!!...it was
necessary to take a
position, so the French
Commander
did any effort
to prevent a shameful
capitulation and finally
decided to
leave the
"Castelluccio". When night
came he had his men
armed and ready to leave,
but first he ordered
to hang around the neck of a
donkey,
that
happened to be there
by chance,
a lit lantern. The animal
was
left free
to move
around the small fortress
and
it
misled the
enemy lines who, not suspecting anything, did
not realize that the
French
garrison had moved to Genoa.
The next day the Austrians
attacked the fortress
but were amazed when they
found no opposition whatsoever. Up to this point
the story could pass but something else was
added: the non-existent
battle was transformed
by the
Austrians into a victory. In the
Second World War the same structure was used
by the
German
army
due to its
position and
a bunker was
built
under the fortress which is
still present today.
